Visa & Work Permit Guide

The main visas and permits for moving between Ireland and Australia, in both directions. Rules, thresholds and fees change — check the official page linked on each option before you apply.

This is guidance, not the official requirement. Eligibility is decided by the Australian Department of Home Affairs (moving to Australia) or the Irish Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment and Immigration Service Delivery (moving to Ireland). Australian Visa Options

Requirements
  • •Irish passport, aged 18 to 35 when you apply
  • •No dependent children coming with you
  • •Funds: about AUD 5,000, plus a return or onward fare (or funds for one)
  • •First 417 must be lodged while you are outside Australia
  • •Meet health and character requirements
Benefits
  • ✓No job offer or sponsor needed
  • ✓Work with one employer for up to 6 months (some exceptions apply)
  • ✓Study for up to 4 months
  • ✓Leave and re-enter during the visa
  • ✓Second and third year possible after specified work (e.g. 88 days in eligible regional industries for a 2nd)
Limitations
  • !Not designed as a pathway to permanent residence
  • !Children cannot be included
  • !Over-age applications are refused — the limit is your age when you apply
  • !Partner needs their own visa
